SWIMMERS MUST BE AGED 8+ AND ABLE TO SWIM 100m (4 lengths) CONTINUOUS FRONT CRAWL WITH HEAD IN WATER OR HAVE PASSED THE 'LEARN TO SWIM STAGE 7 AWARD'. These are not 'learn to swim' sessions. All new swimmers will need to be assessed by one of our coaches at their first session. There will be 4 lanes with up to 6 Juniors in each, depending on abilities. The lanes are coached as Lane 1 - 1 coach, Lane 2 - 1 coach, Lane 3&4 - 1 coach. This allows for good coach:swimmer ratios and more individual attention for the juniors. The sessions include front crawl technique drills and a main set, distance varies per lane with a few minutes for other skills or challenges at the end. The content of the sessions may vary with each lane. The aim is to improve each Juniors' ability to swim with progression through the lanes into Lane 4 and then progress into our Progression Swim Sessions at the Hewett Academy on Wednesday evenings and also into our Open Water Swim Sessions at Whitlingham Lake. Once Juniors reach 18 years of age they can join our adult sessions. More information:
  • Meeting point is at the pool side fire door entrance/exit.
  • Please do not forget to bring your membership card as it contains emergency contact details as well as medical info.
  • All swimmers please come 'swim ready' so they can get changed on the poolside. This is because another Junior swimming club use the pool before us and will be using the changing rooms as our Juniors arrive. If your junior also attends our run session beforehand - many of our juniors run with their swimming kit or a Trisuit on underneath their running kit.
  • We require a 'parent to coach' handover at the start and end of each session. If your junior is attending the swim session only, please bring your Junior to the coaches at the fire exit pool door and collect them from the main pool door at the end of the swim session. To adhere to British Triathlon Safeguarding policies, we do not allow Juniors to walk to and from the car park on their own, unless they are over 16 and written permission has been requested and accepted by our coaching team.
  • Please remember to bring any medications your junior may require, inform the coaches and make sure your junior knows to bring them poolside and give to the coaches to look after during the session. e.g Epi-pens or Asthma inhalers
  • Please remember water bottles to bring poolside.
  • If your Junior is attending the run and the swim session, our coaches will escort them from the run field to the pool for the swim session, please can you collect your junior from the main pool door at the end of the swim session.
  • If driving to the school, please park in the car park from Albermarle road to avoid being locked in.
  • If the session has to be cancelled it will be marked as 'Cancelled' here on this page and an email sent to all participants with as much notice as we can provide.
If you have any questions, feel free to email JuniorCoaches@tri-anglia.co.uk
  • PLEASE NOTE:
  • Juniors must be booked into sessions to attend.
  • Please join the waiting list if the session is full. You will be notified via email if a space becomes available, but please also check the list of names on this page incase you miss the email.
  •  The booking list freezes at 12 noon on the session day. If you have booked your child(ren) on to the session and then they are not able to attend, please remember to remove their name(s) from the list before 12noon on the day, so that another Junior is able to take their place. After 12 noon, please do email us to let us know if your junior can't make the session as if we can, we may be able to fill the space with a Junior from the waiting list.  JuniorCoaches@tri-anglia.co.uk
  • If your junior is unable to attend a session and you don't remove their name you will STILL be charged for the session.

Norwich Junior Adventure Triathlon 2026
We are excited to be hosting the 2026 Junior Adventure Triathlon after the success of last year's event.
The event is an Adventure Triathlon which includes an open water swim, a challenging off-road mountain bike ride (definitely mountain bikes - no road bikes!) and a trail run.
It is a closed club event, only open to Tri-Anglia Junior Members.
It is not an official British Triathlon event so there are no timing chips or technical officials. We do provide medals, a finish line, race numbers & race belts, dedicated transition, marked out courses, safety kayak & powerboat trained staff, friendly, helpful marshals and St Johns Ambulance First-Aid.
Open to ages 8-16
Distances for all three disciplines are your Juniors' choice. We want the event to be fun for everyone.
We have suggested age group distances and then it's up to your Junior to choose how many laps of each course they would like to do.
We will set out a 50m swim triangle, 800m bike lap and a 400m run lap.
These distances may change on the day, it all depends on how accurate the tractor driver is when he cuts the grass!
For example: They could swim 2 laps (100m), bike 3 laps (2.4km) and then run 2 laps (800m). If they prefer running to biking, they could run more laps than they bike. Just as long as they have fun and challenge themselves!
8 years – suggested distances:
Swim 50m, Bike 800m, Run 400m  - or more.
9-10 years – suggested distances:
Swim 100m (2 laps), Bike 1.6km (2 laps), Run 800m (2 laps)  - or more/less.
11-13 years  – suggested distances:
Swim 150m (3 laps), Bike 2.4km (3 laps), Run 1.2km (3 laps) - or more/less.
14-16 years – suggested distances:
Swim 200m (4 laps), Bike 3.2km (4 laps), Run 1.6km (4 laps) - or more/less!
Prior to the event, it is very important that your Junior has some experience of swimming in open water.
We will not let them swim in open water in the event without checking their competency first. We need to know they can swim well in open water.
Our coaches are running some junior coached open water sessions in June that you can book into.
These are scheduled for Sat 6th, Sat 13th and Wed 17th June. Either Beginner or Intermediate level sessions.
If any of the Juniors are not keen on the open water swim, they can opt to complete a bike/run Duathlon. We'll start them on the bike course at the same time as others in their age group start their bike laps. Let us know if that is your preference.
The event will kick off the Norwich Triathlon Festival Weekend which continues on the Saturday at 4pm with BUCS Championships (definitely worth hanging around to watch the University Triathletes swim start!) and of course the main weekends' event is our award-winning Norwich Triathlon on Sunday 21st June.

If you want to sign up please fill in the attached form BLANK 2026 JAT Entry Form and email it to: juniorcoaches@tri-anglia.co.uk If you can't access the form please email us and we'll help you out. We will send you all the information for the event in a race briefing about a week before the day.
Maximum 30 places available – first come first served.

BEGINNER - Junior Open Water Coached Swim Sessions

For Junior swimmers (Under 18 years) who are/have:

  • Competent swimmers (Swim England Stage 7+  or those who already attend our Tri-Anglia Junior pool sessions).
  • Age 8-12yrs (Or older with little open water experience)
  • None or very little OPEN WATER swim experience
  • TA Juniors from NHSG lanes 1 & 2.
To prepare our club juniors for the Norwich Junior Adventure Triathlon and to give experience and develop skills for swimming in Open Water If you have a Tri-Anglia junior who our coaches don't currently see on a regular basis or who does not attend any of our Junior club swim sessions you are still welcome to book into these sessions, but our coaches will need to assess the competency of your Junior swimmer prior to the session. Please email juniorcoaches@tri-anglia.co.uk for more information and to discuss. Very important details - please read. 1. NO CARD - NO SWIM! The lake swims operate a very strict 'NO CARD - NO SWIM’ Safety policy. Your junior will not be allowed in the water if they don’t have their membership card, even if parents are present. 2. Arrive early and swim ready please - no changing room available before your session 8.40am Arrival time on the deck for the 9am swim start. Please arrive early, with swimsuits on under clothes. Early arrival will allow for parking - pay & display, walking round to the deck and will also allow the Juniors to settle in and feel comfortable in the new setting, registration, safety briefing and faffing with wetsuits! You can put wetsuits on at the lake on the deck. NO late arrivals will be allowed in the water and you will still be charged for the session. We share the facility with our Tri-Anglia adult members. Changing rooms will only be available AFTER swimming for showering/changing and under strict safeguarding rules for Juniors.  3. Parental line of sight for juniors aged 16 and under. If your junior is aged 16 or under, a parent/carer will need to stay on the deck for the duration of the session to provide Parental Line of Sight Safety Cover. This is in addition to the safety cover provided by Whitlingham and is mandatory British Triathlon Open Water Policy. There are seats, toilets and tea/coffee making facilities on the deck for you to use whilst you watch your junior. 4. Compulsory Wetsuits Wetsuits are compulsory at all temperatures. Please contact us if you need a wetsuit for your junior. We might be able to help as we have a few spares. Email: juniorcoaches@tri-anglia.co.uk If during the session, our coaches feel your Junior needs to leave the session, they will explain this to you. It might be relating to the cold temperature or if your Junior is not able to conduct themselves in a manner that is deemed to be safe by our coaches. Our coaches decisions are final and the decision will be made for the safety of your junior and the rest of the group.

  • Age 12+ (Can be younger if they have relevant experience - please contact our coaches to discuss)
  • Previous experience in Open Water
  • TA Juniors from NHSG lanes 3, 4 and Hewett sessions

To prepare our club juniors for the Norwich Junior Adventure Triathlon and to give experience and develop skills for swimming in Open Water.

If you have a Tri-Anglia junior who our coaches don't currently see on a regular basis or who does not attend any of our Junior club swim sessions you are still welcome to book into these sessions, but our coaches will need to assess the competency of your Junior swimmer prior to the session. Please email juniorcoaches@tri-anglia.co.uk for more information and to discuss. Without this information and agreement from our coaches in place, swimming will not be permitted in these sessions. Very important details - please read. 1. NO CARD - NO SWIM. The lake swims operate a very strict 'NO CARD - NO SWIM’ Safety policy. Your junior will not be allowed in the water if they don’t have their membership card, even if parents are present. 2. Arrive early and swim ready please. (no changing rooms available before the session) 9.10am arrival time on the deck for the 9.30am swim start. Email: juniorcoaches@tri-anglia.co.uk If during the session, our coaches feel your Junior needs to leave the session, they will explain why to you. It might be relating to the cold temperature or if your Junior is not behaving in a manner that is deemed to be safe by our coaches. Our coaches decisions are final and the decision will be made for the safety of your junior and the rest of the group.
