Autumn Waveney Triathlon 2023

by Mark Philo

We hosted Autumn Waveney on 3rd September this year as the 2nd Waveney event of the year as things are now back to normal after Covid and in this events case, a re-build of the pool venue.  The event has had a modification this year in that addition construction of a new residential estate has gone ahead where our original finish straight is now the main entrance to the estate.

With that entrance being our only outlet for the bikes from transition, Steve Hunter, event organiser set it up so that the exit from mount line to main road is a “dead zone” where no time is recorded as the competitor passes through. This doesn’t mean they can sit, have a rest, grab a coffee.  They are still expected to progress forward, but it allows full safety while passing through this traffic sensitive zone.

That issue solved, it was business as usual, and we had a great turnout of competitors (again with plenty of first timers) totalling 107 starters this time.

Weather conditions were perfect for a fast bike as there was little wind and warm.

Fastest male (open) on the day was Sam Smith of Ipswich Triathlon Club in 51 min 11 sec, a first Waveney win for Sam.

Fastest female was Katt Riley (Tri-Anglia) in 61 min 45 sec, a first win for Katt also.

Waveney Triathlon has been running since 1996 with 21 editions of Spring Waveney and 14 editions of Autumn Waveney which started in 2007.  Both events follow the same course and are ideal season opener/closer or offer a great personal challenge to see if you can improve your time over the season.

Many thanks go to Steve Hunter as race director and Emily Barclay as marshal coordinator. Also to all marshals who helped and encouraged all competitors.
